A Beautiful December Wedding

I hope you all are enjoying your Christmas Holiday Season.

Here are a few shots of a wedding I did this month at the Giddings Stone Mansion, here in Brenham, Texas.

The bride and her sweet family all have wonderful taste and it was a joy to do this wedding.

Centerpieces were made in urns the bride purchased. They were a mossy gray color. We used soft pinks and creams and whites. Hydrangeas, roses, silver Brazil berries... It was a beautiful palette.

We used succulents and rosemary and moss in birdcages for some of the table centerpieces.

The soft palette of lush flowers was accented by the bride's collection of vintage ribbons. Her bouquet, pictured above.

What it is really like to live in a transracial family

A few weeks ago, I spent a weekend with my big sister. The time we spent together was not atypical; we went out to eat, did a little shopping, and splurged on pedicures. What was atypical were the confused looks from the ladies giving the pedicures, from the overly chatty check-out man at a store, and from the parents of my nephew's friends when we went to pick him up from a birthday party as we gently corrected all those assuming we were just friends.
Even now as an adult, I still seem to forget from time to time that my sister and I look so different from one another to the outside world. When I was born in 1985, I became the sixth and final child of a family already made up of two bio sisters and three bio Korean siblings who had joined our family several years earlier. My first photos of life in this new world are five individual shots of each of my siblings holding me in a rocking chair at the hospital, grinning from ear to ear at their little sister (a title that at 21 years of age I still can't seem to shake and don't really care to). From day one, the faces around me looked nothing like my own, and that was my normal from that point on.
Many pre-adoptive parents are hesitant to add children of different races to their family for a multitude of reasons. Living in non-diverse areas, wondering how to raise children with a strong sense of their birth culture and self while raising them in a whole different world, and dealing with the inevitable looks, questions, and occasional disparaging comments when venturing outside the home are all valid concerns. For adoptive parents, these concerns are only multiplied when there are already biological children to factor into the equation.
Parents with biological children need to assess the impact adding additional children to their home will have on their existing children. Many struggle with wondering if it is fair to expose the children they already have to a situation in which the new additions will require much extra work and attention during the initial adjustment period and possibly beyond. The prospect of turning a household upside down while also making the family different every time they step out the front door by adding a child of a different racial background is downright intimidating. Yet from my experience, different can become a family's normal pretty quickly.
In a home with three children who came to us at older ages from an institutionalized setting in South Korea , race (though something addressed and respected within our household) was probably one of the least significant issues we faced as a family. There were problems with attachment, adjusting to different types and amounts of food, old hurts to heal, and a previous life of sub-par medical and dental care to correct. When the three newest family members first started at the elementary school our two oldest sisters were already attending, a racially derogatory comment was made about our new additions while out on the playground. My gentle, soft-spoken oldest sister gave the kid the verbal lashing of his life. No one talked about her brother and sisters that way and that was the beginning and end of it.
As I got older, I knew that not only was my family different, but I was different. From day one, I hated it when people asked me which ones my real sisters were (to which I still reply that since I have no fake sisters, I have no idea what they could possibly be referring to). But beyond this, it also started to hurt me when people couldn't or wouldn't see the rest of the world the way I did. I grew up knowing that three of the people who were the whole world to me came out of extreme poverty, that there were scars on their bodies they couldn't recall receiving, and that they had vivid memories of a woman who loved them so much she gave up her heart when she let them go to the orphanage for a chance at a better life. Their history could not be separated from my own.
I never grew up with the white, suburban view of the world my peers shared. When stories came across the news of horrors in places far away, I didn't feel sad for a moment and turn away. Even as a child, I felt it to the core of my being.
Without a doubt, I can say that being the little sister of three people born into a different world has been the overriding element that has made me the person I am today. As a little girl I could locate other countries on a map most adults had barely heard of. I worried about the starving children in Africa as I fell asleep at night. In high school, I stayed after school to work with students who had recently immigrated to the U.S. on improving their English skills and breaking down communication barriers so they could attend mainstream classes. Now as a senior in college I am finishing up a degree in social work so that I can work in the adoption field. In every face, in every situation, I see my sisters and my brother. I am who I am for being their sister.
Was my life made easier by being raised in a multi-racial family? The honest answer to that is: No. But it was made better. Although I was exposed to discrimination, hatred, and general insensitivity from day one, I also stretched and grew in ways that my peers could not.
My siblings made me a citizen of the world from the moment I was born. I can understand poverty, struggle, and the hurts that others carry deep inside of them without ever having to learn it. The man in the check-out line looking confusedly at my sister and me is no big deal. We smile and move on, leaving him to turn it over in his own head. The depth and richness that my sisters and brother have brought to my life, however, is everything.

A Pretty (Fabulous) Wedding!

Hey there...

Well, two posts in one month is pretty amazing, eh?

I got to do a really fun wedding this past weekend.

The family ranch is in Round Top, but the couple and thier kids are both currently living in Vegas!

We had a blast planning it and it was so fun to do a wedding for people who appreciated all the hard work.

We had an orange, purple, lime green color scheme going, with all kinds of added fun like: feathers, metal, and rhinestones!

This is a floating piece I created (see below).

We covered a 2x4 frame with oasis and flowers and hung it above the site where the bride and groom would exchange thier vows.

This is what it looks like installed.

It was so windy we were praying it would stay together.
But, amazingly when I went back to the site Wednesday to pick up rental items, the flowers still looked pretty good considering, and it was all still in one piece!

Baby Shower for a Great Friend

A few weekends ago, me and a few of my great friends threw a baby shower for another great friend... Heather is expecting her third boy. Our boys are really good friends and love to play together.
When Owen was on his way home, and even after he was here, Heather gave us so many clothes and toys... we really didn't have to buy anything at all for Owen.
So, of course I wanted to have a shower for her to try to bring this baby into the world and "shower" him with gifts.

You can't even tell Heather is pregant! (second from left)

We had everyone address thier own thank you note... that is really like a whole different gift to the mom! I had someone do that for me at a shower and try to always do it if possible!

Heather, you are a sweet friend and a great mom! Can't wait to meet baby Austin!!

Fall is the Best time of year!!

Well, it's fall and that is my favorite time of the year.

Fall means: Round Top Antique Fair, fall weddings, gardening, football, and scarecrows!

Here are some pictures of what we have been up to lately.

This is the day Owen and I went out to the antique fields in Round Top... Owen standing in front of the vintage Zapp Hall sign.

Guitar art made out of vintage materials... pretty cool. Would be neat for a boy's room.

Owen in front of our scarecrow. Heather helped me put it out that day. Our scarecrow is for Mrs. Parker's first grade and Mrs. Sommerfeld's Kindergarten classes.
To go with the Krause Super Hero theme this year, we made our scarecrow Spiderman.

It would have gone home with me.

Fall Decor... Out and About...

I love fall! The first hint of hope of cooler weather has rolled in... still no rain but at least there is cooler temperatures!!

Fall is by far my favorite season... I love to decorate and cook and all the fun things that mean fall. And yes, of course, football!

One of my sweet and loyal customers owns the Sunday House, here in Brenham. It's a great little place to pick up some treasures... and everything in there is affordable!

A wall basket full of fun fall foliage...

Miniature hay bales and fall foliage makes a cool metal shelf look interesting on the front porch.

Inside there is a cupboard full of pumpkins, door hangings, and other fun fall items.

The start of my pile to take home! A basket... of course, not so much for me...

It will go upstairs and be the home for a few dozen stuffed animals.

Well, Hello Football Season!

Well, the school year is off and running. Everyone seems to really like thier teachers and classes.

Both big boys knew people in thier classes. Blake has the same teacher for Kindergarten that Reid did, so that was great. His best friend, and his girlfriend (loose term), are both in his class.

This is Wednesday of last week, Owen's first day of frisky frog class. Owen also has the same teacher both big boys did for frisky frogs. This is one nice thing about living in a small town... everyone knows your kids... and luckily everyone seems to like ours. :)

This is Blake at his new desk on the first day of Kindergarten. Can you believe?

He looks so old!

His best friend is sitting right behind him... I told the teacher "fine for now, but watch that... those two can really cut up!"

This is Owen's future cub's shirt, with his player's number on the back.
Future cubs is really neat because you get a varsity football player to run out on the field with, and you get to stand on the sidelines during the national anthem.
Owen sort of got requested to be a future cub... we thought we would wait one more year. But, there is the nicest/sweetest/coolest kid on the varisty team named Eric Duong, who was really excited to have a little asian future cub!

The Knot Fall/Winter Issue

I am not one to brag...

But, I thought some of you might be pleased to know that one of my bouquets got put in the Fall/Winter issue of The Knot Texas Magazine!

I had no idea the picture was going to be in there (it's small, don't get too excited), but one of my brides must have submitted it.

I am proud that they thought enough of it to put it thier magazine.

There is the bouquet at the bottom right hand corner... I remember that bride, she was so cute. Had a love bird theme, and loved that poppy/bright orange color. So, we used hypericum, gerber daisies, roses, spray roses, and wild looking fillers to create the garden feel she was going for.

And I finished it off with a (faux) turquoise hummingbird perched on top the bouquet.

She loved it and so did I!

I would love to have those shoes...

New Wedding Trends

Now a days, anything really does go for event and wedding decor.
Whether your preference is country chic, urban oasis, Texas BBQ, ...whatever... there is something for everyone... and most people have thrown the rules out the window when it comes to event decor.

These days brides... and well, anyone throwing a party for that matter... are doing so many cute DIY type projects for their entertaining.

I personally think it is great to have so many fun things to look at... blogs, websites, pinterest...

It is so easy now for brides and other clients to come up with exactly what they were imagining in their heads. Now, you can visualize just about anything you were thinking by using the Internet.

These are just a few little ideas of things I have either already done or have marked for a party this coming year...

The trick is to use your personality to "season" the wedding... take ideas from everywhere, and incorporate what you want... but be sure to change it and tweek it just enough so that it looks like you, and not a blog!

What We Have Been Doing

Well, I can't believe it is almost July... it seems like the summer is just melting away. I say melting b/c it is so dang hot here...

We have been keeping so busy. Not many weddings this summer for me. Most people are surprised that the summer hasn't been busier for me. But, really spring and fall are by far the busiest. I got married in December, mainly b/c I didn't want to sweat in my pretty dress.

So, we have had lots of small projects here and there, mainly for some of my regular, wonderful clients.

This is a terrible phone picture, as most of mine are, but thought you might want to see. I made one for myself and four for a client of mine.

The owner of The Sunday House, here in Brenham, asked if I could try my hand at these.

If you want one head on out there... she will have some on display!

As some of you know... or if you ever bother to read this blog ( I wouldn't b/c I never post anything!) know that I am very much attached to orphan ministry.

Well St. Paul's VBS made some items for orphans last week during their craft time.

There was such a huge love offering...

Some youth who have gone on these mission trips gave a presentation and told the kids why they were making quilts and scarves.

In Kazakhstan it is so cold and the orphanages there do not have enough warm clothes to go around. So, at Here I Am Orphan Ministry we help support a missionary who lives there and helps meet needs of children there in the orphanages.

They are always so appreciative that there are people who would actually send them gifts.

People they don't even know.

I have an Excursion and had to fit the blankets b/t all the kids in there... it was nuts how many quilts those kids made.

Thanks to all the kids and families who bought fleece, learned how to make quilts, and took the time to make these. You prayed over them and you made them with your hearts and I love you for it!

St. Paul's is where my kids go to preschool and the families there are always doing things for each other. It is such a great place.

Then, you have the Robinson family at football camp.

Can I just tell you that there is nothing more fun than a mama of boys to watch her babies play football...

I am curious, is that a Texas thing, or is it universal?

Here he is showing us his football cleats. He was so proud of them. He gets really angry when you don't let him wear those in the house.
He did great...

You know, some of those coaches were a little in-your-face... and I thought... "well, he is 5 and this might not be good."

He loved it... the meaner they were, the more he liked them.

Whatever is the most like real football. They did stretches and learned how to growl at each other like big scary dudes.

Again, he loved it.

What Happens in Vegas...

No, I didn't go... but my parents did... Off to Vegas on Thursday morning to celebrate thier anniversary. Good Job, Dad.

They are staying at the Mandarin Oriental... totally posh. Look it up. My dad has stayed there on several business trips when he has been away in the Phillipines and India.

Congratulations Reid!!

Reid had his Kindergarten Graduation today!
He was so proud... but I was more proud! So cute.
His teacher, Mrs. Sommerfeld, is so sweet. She has been so good to him and I know he will miss her after this year.
She put most of that stage together herself, she is just that way. All year she has gone above and beyond to make things special for her class. We love her dearly.
It has gone so fast... how? One day I was swaddling him and giving him a bottle and now he is reading!
Next time I will turn around and he will be looking down at me and yelling, "Bye, Mom!" as he drives away in his truck!
Rip my heart out.
I made it through his graduation ceremony without crying... but then we went back to his classroom, and his teacher had made a slide show for the parents to watch.
And then that dang Taylor Swift song about growing up came on... "oh, darling, don't you ever grow up... just stay this little..." and I was totally undone. I was a blubbering mess from then on.

At least I didn't cry as much as the first day of Kindergarten... right?

Congratulations, Reid... you are such a sweet, handsome, smart young man and I am so proud of you!!

Well, it looks like I am down to posting once a month... really nice. I am so sorry.

I have no real excuse other than we have a million irons in the fire right now.

With the end of school and mommy working a bunch, the blog kinda gets left on the back burner. Well, actually we just took it off the stove all together, now didn't we?

My brother Rob graduated last Friday from Texas A&M. He started work this morning. It is still so hard to believe.

This time two years ago he was in a war zone in Iraq. Now, he has finished his school and is moving on with his life...

We sang the national anthem Friday at his graduation... puts things in perspective. He helped defend our freedoms and help keep that flag in it's place. He came home (not injured) and finished school. How fortunate we are as his family that he came back.

So, he sat there with the other thousands of names and waited for his degree. No one really knowing what he has been through, or what he sacrificed of himself, to get to that point.

Words can't describe that amount of pride, as a big sister, of someone who has made himself into someone worth so much respect.

(I want to pat myself on the back for only crying in graduation one time... just so you know.)

Thank you to Rob, and all our service people, for thier sacrifice. Let us never take that for granted.

Blake has very little time left in PreK. 3 days, to be exact. My babies are growing up too fast. The next few weeks will be filled with parties, programs, water days at school... Kindergarten graduation for Reid... I am sure I will shed a few (wink) tears...

I am so ready for summer, and fun and sitting around and having our day start in pajamas!

And, for the folks interested in weddings and flowers, here are some pictures of Chelsea's wedding this past April. So cute! She did lots of the styling herself and I am very impressed with the turn out! They are a cute, funky, artsy couple and had a wedding to match!

Hello, Again!

Hi there! I am so sorry it has been so long for me to have posted!

Life around here has been crazy. We have nearly survived a spring wedding season... Now we are on to Easter, Mother's Day, and prom!

Around the Robinson estate, we have been ripping up carpet, painting paneling, changing light fixtures... It's been wild! But, when you are decorating and sprucing for everyone else, you kinda feel like you should be able to do it just a bit at home, too.

The boys are doing great. Reid is loving school and really growing up right before our eyes! After the 4th pair of school shoes this school year alone, I am wondering if Reid has growth "spurts" or if he is just an out of control bean sprout??

Blake is also doing great. He is excited about Kindergarten at Krause next year, and to be on the same awesome playground as Reid.

Owen is hilarious. He is getting tall and skinny. Both of those words are relative, of course.

He is talking as if he were 5, and thinks he's 10. He will go three mornings in the fall to St. Paul's as a Frisky Frog. I am guessing there aren't many frogs any friskier than Owen.

When your roses are done in the vase, stick them in a grapevine wreath, and have a keep sake.

I love potted containers. I alway swear in August when I am watering them, I will never plant them again. But, spring is deceptive, and hopeful, all at the same time. So, here I go again with my pots!

When you are in love with pots, and plants in pots, you probably love old junk w/ your plants and pots too!

The more the merrier!

The garden outside my kitchen window. We sit here and eat breakfast or dinner sometimes.

There is a bird bath and a bird feeder that I try to keep birdseed in.

The boys like to try to name which birds they are.

I like to mix the herbs and flowers in this bed.

It's fun to watch it grow and progress and it's easy to maintain because it's size isn't overwhelming.

Thanks, Granny, for pulling these plants stands out of the garbage! They are awesome, and already cute and worn for me.

Blake's class made a book about "Thier Favorite Uncle" and he was really proud.

A Fun Weekend in Review

Saturday started out really rainy and pretty darn chilly... but it ended up being beautiful.

We made a quick trip down to Houston for the zoo! We have a family year pass b/c we love it so much.

We met Granny and Pa down there for a few hours... Pa is going out of town for two weeks, and needed a grandson fix.

Reid chose the lion for his carousel animal... fitting.

Reid got to feed a giraffe!

In the new African part of the Houston zoo, they have added some really cool stuff.

You can eat at thier new restaurant, feed the giraffes, see the monkeys in thier new home...

it was alot of fun.

We have been really busy... I guess spring is just like that. So much to do and not much time to get it all done. I have been working alot, but have no pictures to show for it. So, as soon as I get more pictures in from brides and other things, I will post them... promise.

For now, let's just look at all the random pictures I take w/my phone's camera. Reid loves food. He loves to eat. And, it's actually pretty fun to watch him eat.

The house is in good hands. The boys have been hanging out alot lately w/my brother, Rob. He was in the army and in Iraq for a good while, so he is our soldier...
Right here we are playing "army mans."

I think owen was a little more into the friendship than the other guy...

Gettin' In the Mood

We have roses, roses, roses... think outside the box... why not something besides red? Why not all different shades of roses in a beautiful bouquet?

Tired of all those empty vases around the house? Bring by an empty vase to have refilled! Or take a bouquet wrapped in paper and bow for your sweetie to put in thier own vase at home!

If anyone is interested... if you are ready for spring like I am and can't wait any longer...
I have some small bedding plants available for sell.
pansies, violas, swiss chard, alyssum, hollyhocks, kale, creeping jenny, sedums, spanish lavendar, all in 4" pots.
All the 4" pots are $1.
I also have bright red geraniums for $4, they are in 6" pots. The geraniums are in full bloom!

Bridal Expo and Wedding

First, let me invite you to come out to the Bridal Expo this Sunday (Jan. 23rd) at the Washington County Event Center. It's from 1 - 5 pm, and there will be alot of vendors there. Whether you are a bride, mother of the bride, or just throw alot of parties, I think it will be an excellent resource.

There will be door prizes, so come and see if it's your lucky day!

Now... onto the fun part...

This past Saturday I had the priveledge of doing the flowers for Jodi Winkelmann's wedding. First, let me say that Dusty and I were invited to the ceremony, and it was beautiful. Such a sweet couple, and I really enjoyed hearing thier vows and how sincere they were.

The reception was at Fireman's training center. They did a wonderful job of making it look elegant and inviting.

Christmas Break

Hey Everyone!
I hope you all had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year.
The first week the boys were off from school for Christmas, we ended up driving to Dickson, TN for my Nanny's funeral. It was a sad time, and a hard time... but it was also good because we got to see family we hadn't seen in years. Many of my mom's side of the family had not met Dusty or any of my kids!
When we were on our way home we were passing through Shreveport and decided to try to find the office of Vexcon. For those of you who aren't familiar with Billy the Exterminator, well... you need to catch up!
Billy the Exterminator comes on A&E on Tuesday nights. The boys always make sure to get thier baths and homework done in time so they can watch this show!
Billy and his brother Ricky are always having to catch snakes, alligators, raccoons, and other creatures out of people's houses.
Reid always plays like he is Billy, and Blake is always Ricky. I think sometimes poor Owen gets cast as the raccoon.
Here are the pictures from our celebrity meeting... So, we show up to Benton, LA and have to ask a police officer for directions to the Vexcon office.
Did I mention it is Christmas Eve?
Well, here it is Christmas Eve about noon, and here we go to give our boys this experience, right?
Well, it just so happens that this policeman that we ask for directions has also been on the show. And, had all the Billy and family cell phone numbers and home phone numbers with him.
So, of course, what does he do? He calls them at home. On Christmas Eve. Um, here is what this poor family is thinking:
"What kind of psycho people drive from Texas to meet us on Christmas Eve?"
That would be the Robinson Family.

But, I will tell you that they told that office to bring us by the house and let us get a picture with them on Christmas EVE!! Can you believe that?

So, we got a police escort to meet the entire Vexcon crew! They were so sweet to agree to meet us, I really can't thank them enough! The boys couldn't believe it, and well, neither could Dusty or I.

Billy rescues all kinds of animals and takes them to the Cypress Zoo. There are all kinds of rescued and rehabilitated animals there for people to see.

Here is a peacock. Really pretty... It just let us walk right by it... Blake was not so sure.

Oh, and did I mention that Mr. Policeman's wife works at the Cypress Zoo Park, and let us in free?

Mr. Policeman was so nice and really made us feel at home in Benton, LA. If we are ever that way again, we will surely look them up!

Blake is still not sure. I think the policeman's presence was totally freaking him out...

Maybe he thought were were going to get arrested... ha!

It was neat how God turned a sad trip into a time of fun and family. Made me think of Nanny that much more.

Closed for Christmas Break...

Hi there.
Well, this is going to have to be it until the end of the year...
We planned on being around this week, but life has a funny way of changing your schedule for you.
We will be closed this week also, we are off to Nashville, TN to a funeral. My Nanny died this past weekend. :(
She was a wonderful lady, full of life, and we will miss her. But, now she is in Heaven.

The week after Christmas we will be at Disney World! So, obviously I won't be able to help you with flowers then either!

I hate to leave anyone stranded, and hopefully I won't...

This post might get a bit wordy, so hang in there.

Owen turns two years old tomorrow, Dec. 11, 2010.

I am usually mushy when my kids have a birthday. Sometimes people know about it, and sometimes they don't. But, for this one... you will know, trust me.

This is Owen the day after he came home, Aug. 28, 2009. So round and happy. We couldn't figure out what to do with him he was so easy. The boys immediately loved him.
He ate and ate and ATE... drank bottles of Korean formula (until we ran out, which was in like 10 hrs.) and slept.
Well, he slept on Korean time... he and I would sit up at night between 2 and 4 or 5 am and hang out... his little jet lag was hard to break but we did it. We got to know each other. I would hold him and rock him... stare at his sweet little round face.

This is Owen last month at a birthday party.

Now he is this 2 year old boy... not baby. He sleeps when we do (most of the time), eats what we eat (sometimes more than the big boys) and speaks English really well. (For anyone curious, he really never knew Korean because he came over here at 8 months, so really he speaks rather excellent English for a two year old).

For some moms I know it might be hard to imagine loving a baby as your own, when it didn't come out of your belly. What do you do when he doesn't have daddy's eyes, or mommy's nose?

I will tell you what you do: You don't even notice...

He is your son... you know his laugh, his cry, his smell... just like your biological children (ie: the homegrowns).

You teach him about his family... his grandparents, his great grandparents. You teach him to walk, to talk, to play well with others, to potty-train (we're not there yet, don't rush me...)

You cherish and remember each moment because one day... just like Reid and Blake... he will grow up, drive cars, and go off to college.

But for now, he is just two. He will let me squeeze him, and hold him, and smooch his cheeks. And hold his hand at night through the crib slats until he dozes off...

Owen is a seemless addition to our family.

I know not every adoption is easy, or quick, and not every child attaches so easily. But Owen did, and I am so thankful we were faithful enough to trust God...

Trust that we would get the right baby for us. Trust that he would love us as much as we will love him.

(You can never have enough pictures of your baby sleeping.)

And God is faithful.

Owen, Happy Birthday! You are such a sweet boy and I can't wait to see what you do when you grow up! We love you, pumpkin head.

Owen has his own personal style.

Can you tell he has two older brothers? He is actually quite a good shot.

Heritage Society of Washington County Trunk Show

This Saturday and Sunday the Heritage Society of Washington County will be having thier annual home tour and trunk show! Come visit us. We will have some home decor items, hanging baskets and potted containers, fresh greenery and wreaths, and more!

MooseFeathers will also be selling sack lunches and other goodies. Come fill up on hot coffee and spiced tea, plenty of desserts, banana and pumpkin bread by the loaf, tearoom style sandwiches, etc...

The mansion will be open from 10 am to 5 pm for your shopping enjoyment. Be sure to also check out the homes on tour between 1 and 4 pm!

What I Am Working On Now

Well, fall is my favorite time of year. I say it every year. It's time to start cooking and decorating... and here in Texas it's really the best time to be outside.

Mom and I are going to be a part of the Heritage Society's trunk show again this year. Washington County has a wonderful old mansion that we have weddings and large events at. Every year, on the weekend before Thanksgiving, they have a holiday trunk show and home tour. It is always really fun.

Mom and I will have a booth there again this year. Tons of fun things like hanging baskets, potted containers, antiques and cute "junque." Mom will be making box lunches to sell also for the shoppers. It is going to be so good: tea sandwiches, pumpkin bread, spiced tea, fruit salad... all the good girlie stuff! I like the trunk show also b/c it motivates me to get some of the projects done I have been meaning to do all year.

This rose topiary with the black urn will be there, available for purchase.

So will these cute pedestals I made. Just some vintage plates and candles sticks make some really cute dessert displays!

And then there is my fall garden!! I am so proud of it this year. I am growing cabbage, tomatoes, peppers, onions, lettuce and tons of herbs.
I have parsley (curly and flat), rosemary, lots of lavendar...
The herbs I love to put in flower orders. I will be drying my own lavendar to use in the spring for weddings and other orders.

This is a picture of my pot shed. That is really all it does is hold pots. But, it's really cute.

Everytime I tell Dusty I need a potting shed, he tries to tell me I already have one.

I always correct him: I have a garden shanty, not a garden shed.

BIG difference.

Okay... these pictures are not linked together in any sort of way, so bear with me. These are just little snapshots from the cell phone... my life in a large nut shell. This is my brother Rob (or Robert as me and mom will ALWAYS call him, sorry Robert.) This is one of the first weeks he was officially out of the army. That day we met him and his girlfriend Krystin for lunch, and then Robert was going to find an apartment.

He is back in school finishing his degree (now on the Army's tab) and making excellent grades.

So proud.

It's wierd because I actually start to feel like I know my customers. This is a niece that called from California. She was really nice and by the time we were off the phone, I wanted to send her a sympathy card.

The light was bad... but you know the rule... you NEVER wake a sleeping baby.

Can anyone tell me please, why J.Crew hasn't called him yet for a modeling contract?

Aggie Game Day

Hey there! I am sorry it has been so long since my last post. We have been super busy here at the Robinson house.

This past Saturday all the guys went to the Aggie Game. We played Mizzou (I think) and we lost. So, we had a few angry Americans around our house... but they all had a great time.

We are turning it into a yearly tradition that all the guys go to the Aggie game and all the girls can go shopping.

The girls had a great time. It was me, my mom, Dusty's mom, Krystin (my brother's girlfriend) and Owen. Yes, Owen had to come with us. There is no way he could sit through even half the game. The guys had pretty good seats. They were actually really close to where the team runs out of the locker room.

We just got rid of this camera... time for a new one. Look at that blurry spot on Blake's face. ARG!

Hi! I am so excited to get to post this wedding. This was a wedding at Rose Emporium that I did the flowers for this summer.

A little backstory... I have now done three weddings for three girls in the same family. This was the most recent of the three.

I have grown to really love this family, this young couple in particular.

They have huge hearts, serving both locally in thier own town, but also in Haiti.

All the pictures were taken by Kelly Hornberger. She is an awesome photographer here in Texas.

One of the most enjoyable things about my job has been the people. The brides, the moms, the families, the other professionals...

You are right, my job is Awesome!

The ceremony and reception were held at the Antique Rose Emporium.

This was one of the candleabras at the ceremony in the little chapel on site.

This is the covered pavillion where most of the dining tables were set up.

This family really paid attention to every detail. Everything was already so cute before I got there with all these flowers... they were like the icing on the cake!

I really tried to use alot of fresh herbs and other freshly picked materials to accentuate the flowers in a natural way.

Some of what I used: rosemary, lemon verbena, mint, parsley blooms, and plumosa fern.

The two family rows of chairs at the cermony had cute little floral bouquets attached with ribbon.

Claire is such a beautiful woman! How chic and elegant!

Thank you Claire, and mom Amy, for letting me be a part of this special day. Your family is awesome, I love you all.

Claire and Brent... hold on tight. You are in for the adventure of a lifetime!

A Crimson Rose Wedding

This was a wedding a few weeks ago here in Brenham. The bride really loved the 'black magic' roses, along with plenty of lush crimson red roses. Her accent colors were silver, black and cream. It was a really simple and pretty wedding.

The ceremony was at First Baptist Church in Brenham. And the reception was at Ant Street Inn. I really like Ant Street Inn. It was big enough for a large wedding, but still felt intimate. Every other pew had candles and river rocks in glass cylinders.

Rose balls were hung off the pews by black ribbon.

This was just a pretty shot of my "supplies" as I loaded my car on my way up to the church!

Sorry for the poor picture quality... once again, the only camera I had was my cell phone!

Hey there! I can't believe it is already time to go back to school. Even on the days I am exhausted and really can't take one more screaming match (the boys, not me) or one more spilled cup of red Kool Aid on the carpet, I realize that I will miss them when they go back to school.

It was our first summer with Owen home and it was a blast. Owen is actually an excellent swimmer, at 19 months old, yelling "CANNON BALL" and jumping head first into the pool w/his little arm floaties on. That is his way: he is fearless.

Reid will start Kindergarten and Blake will be in PreK. Where has the time gone?

I am so proud of them, they are becoming such sweet little men. But, trust me, they are all boy.

A funny quote from Reid two nights ago in bathtub. All three boys still pile into the same bathtub. It's fun to watch all those legs try to snake in there, knowing the days of sharing a tub are nearly gone.

So, Reid and Blake were apparently arguing over something... a toy? a popsicle? a popsicle stick? a washrag? a bar of soap? who knows. Finally, Reid looks over at Blake and says, "Blake, let's just shake hands, and let pythons be pythons."

And he was dead serious.

Are you kidding me?

Just a prime example of why I love my job!

Sarah and Abel

Sarah and Abel Crosby got married on May 15, 2010... It was a beautiful, fun, and very PINK wedding. This will probably be one of the longer posts you read from me, so grab a cup of coffee and get comfortable!

The ceremony was at First Baptist Church, Brenham, TX. The carpet had recently been replaced which was a blessing... No more maroon, now it is a neutral gray. It was a good thing, because there was going to be a pink wedding there, no matter what color the carpet was!

The guests tossed various shades of pink rose petals at the bride and groom before they drove off.

This was such a cute idea. The couple didn't want to see each other before the wedding. But, they wanted to get a little time together to calm thier nerves. So, with a door separating them, they got to hold hands and never see each other!

There is a more serious version of this picture, with thier eyes closed like they are praying. But I chose to post this one because, to me, this is what Sarah and Abel are really like. Fun and silly and in love!

There are so many cute things you can do for weddings these days. I sometimes think about what my wedding would look like if I did it again... with all this practice under my belt.

These cookies are by Haley Glasco at the Muffin Top. You can see her other creations on her blog and website. She did all the fabulous desserts at the wedding... an entire dessert buffet!

The reception was at the Gidding Stone Mansion. This was a large "fish bowl" type arrangement sitting on the piano. The piano served as the gift table.

One great thing about this wedding was nearly everything at the ceremony was reused at the reception. The toppers of these centerpieces were the decorations that hung on the pews. When the wedding was over, we just popped them off the pews, and placed them on top of the cylinders full of coffee beans and limes.

Hi there! I am doing a wedding this September using some of the colors below. Plums, fuchsia, pink and lime green! Such a pretty combination.

These colors are so fun and "gardeny", but the plum mixed in adds just enough sophistication and makes the arrangement a bit more modern.

First, let me give credit where it's due... These pictures are actually stolen off Heather's blog. She took good pictures of her child, with a good camera, at a good distance.

I, on the other hand, was wrestling Owen, feeding him gummies, trying to see over the person in front of me. And, well, if I am honest, forgot to take pictures half the time because I was too busy being all mushy over my baby.

Blake stole the show in a break out performance this spring. I might be a tad biased, but wouldn't you be? Look at those cheeks.

(for those of you out of towners, blake is the cutie pie in the blue shirt, middle row, second from the left, next to the cute blonde....)

I cried like a baby during this song. "Nighty Night" So stinking cute. I always see Blake as a big boy, because he is a big brother now, but watching him sing that sweet song...

A Pretty Spring Wedding

Hey there!

This is a wedding that was just this past Saturday, April 17th. They are some sweet people who live in Hempstead... Holly actually is friends with them also!

Thier son was getting married and they asked me to do the flowers... They also asked me to do the flower beds (at least plant selection) and could not do that job by myself so I got Dusty and his guys at Glasco's to do the "heavy lifting." Thier flower beds turned out amazing and I will try to post some pictures of that as well.

The rain held off until the wedding was over. In Texas, the only two times of year to have an outdoor wedding are spring and fall. However, during both of those times you are in danger of running into freezes, record high temperatures, flooding and drought.... all within two days of each other! God Bless Texas!

The bride loves bluebonnets (who doesn't?) and wanted to incorporate a wildflower theme into her wedding. So, we used lots of lush, garden type flowers and some naturally-looking flowers to get a more fresh cut look. I used blue hydrangea, yellow roses, daises, larkspur and delphinium, sunflowers (tons) and lots of other random things that looked pretty on the flower truck!

There aren't many good pictures out of the ones I took this past Saturday, so I will post more on this wedding when I get the pictures in from thier photographer!

So I love the deep brown garden chairs, instead of the white! LOVE IT! When I saw this color I was so excited... it just looked so rich and expensive! We lined the aisle with hooks I had welded by my pastor (that's right, my pastor), and on the hooks hung mason jars full of flowers!

This is an old wagon that has been in this family for years. We loaded it full of blooming plants and then I stuck a bucket down in the middle, full of fresh cut flowers.... very European flower market, if you ask me.

The arbor pictured first was made by the father of the groom. We covered it in hand made garlands made up of pittosporum, asparagus fern and ming fern. Then, I wrapped in smilax after the garland was hung. The swag has sunflowers, roses, hydrangeas and delphinium.

Hope you are enjoying your spring! Take time to smell all the flowers, not just the roses!

A Robinson Family Update!

Well, we have been pretty busy around here. We are in full blown wedding season, so mommy is working a bunch! Plus, we have had all kinds of fun things that our family has been up to.

Here is Owen in the side flower bed. We have yellow calendulas, red salvia, coral snapdragons, and plenty of other things sprouting up! The gladiolus bulbs are making thier appearance, as well as the larkspur and delphinium!

Here is a picture of my three handsome young men outside the court room in San Antonio last Monday. On Monday, April 5th, Owen became an official US citizen!

Here are my punkins totally sacked out after a long day on the River Walk and at the Alamo. We had so much fun that day! We got finished with our court date, then ate at the Rainforest Cafe on the River walk. Then, we walked over to the alamo, saw the sights, then went over to the mall at the River Center. We always have to make a little pit stop at the Disney Store.

Here we are after owen was made official! Our attorney, Jana Olsen Baker, was so sweet. She did everything for us before we got there, and made everything so easy!

Reid would not cooperate for the picture. Like his Uncle Rob, he is not so crazy about the law enforcement.

Here is Owen wacking the gavel! Judge Casseb let all three of the boys wack the gavel. That was definately the coolest part, and the only time Reid smiled!

This is at the gardens behind the Alamo! So stinking cute!

Here we are being sworn in. The judge made it a point to make sure he could see Owen being sworn in. It didn't count if he couldn't see him!

Sorry the posts are few and far between! It might be like this until the summer. Just too many brides and not enough time!

Well, I know it has been forever since I have posted last. I am sorry. Here is just a small list of things we have done in the last month:

Oh, and I do have a husband and three children... needless to say, life has been a bit busy.

But I did find something interesting in Southern Living (April 2010) this month that I wanted to post about.

Living in the South is something that sets us apart, and we have our ancestors and previous generations to thank for that.

Being a florist I thought this was an interesting tradition I had never heard of for Mother's Day.

Three traditions to keep/bring back from our previous Southern generations:

1. The Easter Dress

2. The Mother's Day Corsage (duh!)

3. The Hostess Apron

You MUST buy a corsage for your mother on Mother's Day. (What is my husband supposed to do with me a florist?? I beg to ask...) The tradition goes as follows when choosing flowers and colors for the corsage. If her mother (your mother's mother) is alive, you purchase red or pink carnations or roses. If her mother has passed, you purchase either white or yellow roses or an orchid!

Why doesn't anyone do this anymore?? If you attend our church, and Mother's day comes, be watching for Dusty's mom at church... She will for sure be wearing a corsage (in red or pink) and I gaurantee the smile on her face will show why we should still do this for our mothers.

My mom doesn't live as close, so whenever we see her around mother's day... she will for sure have a flower to wear or take home. (Hers will also be red or pink!) And, if she is reading, she WILL wear it into the restaurant! Thank you very much!

I also do love aprons, which is why I picked this one out from a little etsy shop called Pig and Company. The print is called English Garden. Perfect floral print for this time of year!

Haiti Relief

Okay, so I know I am a week late on getting this up, but I will post on the Haiti Relief Effort. As many of you know, we adopted our third son, Owen, from S. Korea. We used the Holt International Adoption Agency. We love Holt for many reasons and here are a few:

1. Holt works with children and families where they are in thier native countries. Thier number one goal is to keep a child with thier birth family. If that is not possible, they then try to pursue adoption by someone in thier native country. If all else fails, they put them on the list for Americans to adopt. They do what is BEST for the CHILDREN.

2. They are sweet, wonderful, Christian people who sincerely want to help orphans. There were lots of orphans in Haiti (with very long wait times, try three years), now after the earthquake, there are sure to be more. Holt's first desire is to get those children into stable, permanent, loving homes.

3. They gave me Owen, what more can I say??

So, if you are uncomfortable to give to other organizations, or the Red Cross, for that matter, consider giving to Holt. They use the funds to directly aid orphans, children, and thier families.

A Winter Wonderland!

This past Saturday I did a wedding for a sweet family at our church. I will have more pictures later, when the photographer gets them all edited, but for now... The Bridal bouquet... a terrible picture. It was so pretty. Two different types of cream roses, white waxflower, white lisianthus, lemon leaf, seeded eucalyptus, and stephanotis with pearl pins.
These were the sprays (there were two) that hung on the candleabras. It was a really pretty wedding. The mom, grandmother, and other helpers, put flocked Christmas trees with lights and toule up in the front of the church to resemble the "winter wonderland."
They were so fun. Having three boys, it was neat to watch all the girls get ready, getting flowers pinned in thier hair (white orchids), and putting on make up! So fun to watch and be a part!

Beautiful November Wedding

This is going to be a LONG post, but hang in there. The pictures are so worth it!

These flowers were for some very sweet, dear friends of mine. It is so fun to do flowers for people you know! Of course, it always makes me a tad nervous, because I don't want to disappoint. But, everyone assured me they were pleased. The reception was on the groom's family ranch. Beautiful country right outside Independence.

Half of the centerpieces were hurricanes surrounded by fresh magnolia garland.
The other half of the reception tables had rose bowls containing yellow, orange, and pink roses. All very sherbert, pastel touches of color. Elegant and beautiful, just like the bride.

We did candleabras in a rust color with magnolia garlands up the center pole.

The candleabras were hand made by a friend of the groom, who actually married them also!

This wedding had the sweetest children! There were two precious flower girls. If I had girls, I would want them to be just like them!

And there was a little ringbearer, and he had brothers! Reminded me of my three at home... 100% all boy!

I had so much fun doing this wedding. We got to attend this wedding also, so it was extra special for me. Dusty and I sat and ate dinner on the back porch, lit by candlelight, over looking the reception and the pool sprinkled with rose petals... Are you kidding? It was like the best date we had had in a long time! Plus, the food was wonderful.

Frugal Mommy

Hey there!

So, with times being a little leaner right now, what are you doing to cut costs, save money, or earn extra cash?

One thing we are doing is a swap party! Have you heard of these? All the girls are coming over and bringing thier gentley used items (shoes, accessories, clothing, home decor items, kid's toys,etc...) and we are swapping! That is one way to get to fluff your home and your wardrobe, without spending a dime.

Our swap party is friday, so I will keep you posted (and hopefully have plenty of pics of my haul of goodies!)

We (the Robinsons) are trying to eat at home more and eat out very little. It's so much cheaper and better for us... I am also on a 'no waste' plan. I try to make sure all our fresh food gets eaten first, before we get into anything canned or frozen. It is amazing what you can make from what is in your pantry and freezer, and you are determined NOT to go to the store!

There is a great recipe for cheeseburger casserole on the back of the Bisquick box... try it!

Well... you all might get totally sick of wedding pics, but too bad! That's what pays the bills around here! hahahaha :)

I do have some more weddings to post soon (two really good ones for next week), but until then, this will have to carry you through the weekend.This is a very old fashioned Southern cascading teardrop bouquet. Sometimes it's nice to do the traditional stuff, makes me think of my own wedding. Cream, white and pink roses with greens and baby's breath. My mom's favorite! But seriously... how are you staying warm right now? I have candles going everywhere... you could roast hot dogs and marshmallows in every room in the house! I have to be visually warm as well as physically!

Bundle up, snuggle your sweetie, drink hot chocolate and coffee... Stay warm and have a great weekend!

Fabulous Bouquets

Hello again! I enjoyed my fall wedding season like no other so far. Fall 2009 was a great, fun, and creative season for me. Below are a couple bouquets that I did this fall.

Enjoy! Orange and white roses, green hypericum, seeded eucalyptus, white waxflower, purple heather, sedum blooms, and a type of euphorbia.

This bouquet had all the same, excep the orange roses were replace by more white and cream. Wrapped in chocolate ribbon, how unique!

Hey there! Well this was our first morning back to preK... it's so hard to stop sleeping until 9 am! But, Reid (my good, heavy sleeper) actually got up on his own, got dressed and ate breakfast! He was ready to go back, and that always makes things easier.

We spent the better part of the Christmas break organizing and cleaning out. This has been one of the first breaks we have had since Owen has been home. First, we were trying to get Owen on a sleeping schedule, and then I had like 7 or 8 weddings this fall. So, Dusty was home and I had help, so we got shelves hung, donation things donated, closets organized, etc... It was a great feeling and now I am ready for my spring to get here.

This is a big spray I did as a funeral order. I really did love it! They wanted something bright and cheery, but it also had to be masculine...

It contains: sunflowers, solidago, viburnum branches, green spider mums, eucalyptus, cream phlox, this other little fuzzy flower (I forgot what it's called!), and moss covered seed pods, all in a concrete urn.

I also did some really neat things with cattails in another arrangement for the same funeral.

My Merriest Christmas

Well, this was the best Christmas yet. I guess it is easy to say that every year, but it really was the best Robinson Christmas yet. Three kids is way more fun than two! Owen has been so much fun the last four months. We can't even imagine what we did before he was here. Both of the big brothers had a great Christmas too. They got everything on thier list (and then some!)

It was also a great Christmas because my brother Robert was home for the holidays. Last year was pretty rough because he was in Iraq for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. It was our little Christmas miracle that he was here to hug on. Uncle Rob and Owen with Reid on the couch.

I had a running joke this Christmas that our house was like the Griswald Christmas this year. Have you seen that movie? Christmas Vacation??

I had appliances fry and go out, people picking up flowers on Christmas eve, my house was a wreck, and THIS is what our turkey looked like.

It actually tasted good, after we cut it, but I thought my mom and I were going to wet our pants we laughed so hard when we opened that oven.

My cool refridgerator

So, if you ever need a cheap appliance, let me tell you what to do. I had a huge wedding one weekend, and not all of my flowers would fit in my cooler. YIKES. It wasn't cheap stuff either. We're talking orchids, lillies, etc... So, I called Mat Hobgood at Keeping It New used appliances. He met me up at his shop and I was able to pick up this fridge for $50! Of course, it wasn't cute. It had rust and nasty stuff all over it. But, I got it home, cloroxed it, and painted it with chalkboard paint!! Now it's a nifty little memo board. And, I also took all my broken silk flowers and hot glued those to the handles. Now, it's a conversation starter and no one is repulsed by my fridge!

I just recieved my goodies from my friend Heather! I went to her house a few weeks ago for a Southern Living at Home party and today my treasures came! I got the 2009 Christmas with Southern Living Book... ya'll know me I LOVE BOOKS! There are great recipes in it, and cute little decorating tips.

Like on Page 105, they tell you how to make a fresh herb wreath! So cute. I think that would be a great gift... like for a gardener or hostess.

Tea candles in soup ladels?? OMG it was so cute! pg. 101.

They also decorated mail boxes on page 83. They used magnolia, pine, fresh fruit, and berries to make a garland for the mailbox! LOVE IT.

Happy Birthday, Owen!

On Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, Owen Bruce Robinson turned one year old!! We had a great time at his birthday party. Don't be mad if you didn't get an invitation, it was just the five of us, plus the two sets of grandparents. I even made his cake (which is easy to see when you look at it!)

This is the traditional Korean outfit worn by every child in Korea when they turn one. Owen's foster parents were sweet enough to send an outfit with him on the plane to Houston. It was one of the only possessions he came with. His foster parents are such special people. Doesn't he look so cute in that outfit?? I have to admit, it was hard for Dusty and I to put that on him. After all, he's our little American now. But, it's a part of who he is and I am so glad we did! We will send pictures to his foster parents in Korea.

Aren't you jealous you didn't get some of that cake?? Haley (from the Muffin Top) if you are reading this, don't laugh!!

Dusty, his dad, my dad, and our two big boys (Reid and Blake) went to watch the Texas A&M game... we beat Baylor. Whoop! We will take any win we can get, thank you very much.

My fall garden

Well, here are some pictures of what is happening in my garden right now... it's not much, but it's what I've had time for. Many of the things I plant in the fall don't really bloom until late winter or spring. For example, hollyhocks, snapdragons, sweet peas... these are all planted early, so that they will bloom heavily in the fall. These yellow flowers are my calendulas. I love these flowers. They have herbal uses also, besides just cut flowers, but I don't know what to do with them. If you know, leave me a comment and tell me! I think you can make tea??

Get ready for the best pictures you have seen in a long time!! This is a wedding I did in October for some sweet family friends of ours... as you can see we did flowers and my big boys were in the wedding! It was a perfect, beautiful Texas fall day, and it shows in these pictures.

My friend Lynsey Kramer took all of these. She is amazing and I am so blessed and lucky to have her as a friend, both for the personal benefits and professional as well!

This is Reid and Blake with some of thier friends having a blast in the petals after the wedding.

We lined the aisle heavily with yellow and cream rose petals. It was really pretty. And the kids loved it.

My Life Right Now!

Okay, so this is my life right now, in pictures... Notice that Dusty or I niether one are in any of these pictures, because we are probably cleaning, cooking, or loving on one of our babies (or, be honest, working!) We are so busy, but so blessed! We love our lives and our time together at this house... it's never enough time, but we'll take what we can get!
